DeadMau5 MasterClass Pros

I would recommend the deadmau5 Masterclass to anyone somewhat newer to creating music (or beginning to take music seriously) or is interested in gathering insights from a big name in electronic music.

Sure, there are a million YouTube videos of people giving tips for creating EDM. However, if you go into your MasterClass with the mindset of getting as much value as possible, you’ll find the course is incredibly worth your time.

When you sign up for MasterClass you get a lot more than just the video lessons. There’s also an engaged forum that lets you communicate with other course students. This is a great way to learn from one another if you choose to use it.

However, this isn’t a complete newbie course. MasterClass courses are pitched at people who have started learning about a topic but want to get better, and this course is no different.

The course gives great insight into how complex EDM production can be. Deadmau5 takes you through finding melodies oneshots and fx on an experimental base. This will help you understand some of the workflows that will simplify your method. There are also some great resources you can get for free too.

If you’re an experienced producer, there are still a few tips and tricks that you’ll get. I can’t imagine you’ll get too many technical pointers, but you will get a good peek behind the curtains.

How Deadmau5 MasterClass Could be Improved

Joel Zimmerman’s MasterClass is great, but it isn’t perfect.

This MasterClass in particular highlights the teacher/expert debate about who the better educators are. As a trained teacher, I’m interested in what makes a good educator.

Sometimes,  just because you’re an expert at something, doesn’t mean you’re a terrific teacher. Deadmau5 is an extremely capable producer, but I thought his teaching strategy was a little off sometimes. He rushes through a few key points and there’s more than one time where he doesn’t explain what’s going on too well. Luckily it’s a video course because I had to go back and re-watch scenes a few times to pick up what he’s saying.

It also would have been cool if some parts of the course were a bit more technical for those who have more experience, but I understand the course is marketed for everyone – making it a more simple course, content-wise.

These aren’t deal-breakers for me, but the course is leaving a little on the table. Still though, if you’re a music creator with a little experience and am just starting out, you’ll get a lot from this course.

Is the deadmau5 MasterClass worth it?

All in all, yes, if you’re starting to get into making music and production, you’ll get a lot from deadmau5’s course. You’ll get a lot of great insights from someone who is truly at the top of the game.

The $180 all-access pass is a great price if you’re interested in multiple courses too. I’ve tried multiple courses and I haven’t found a disappointing one yet.
