Introducing CuriosityStream

CuriosityStream is one of the few streaming services that offer only nonfiction content. It is a great service to feed into your curiosity- just as the name suggests. There is so much content you can choose from; it has categories like history, science, lifestyle, society, nature, and more. It is easy to get lost in new information and new ideas with this platform.

CuriosityStream launched on March 18, 2015. The founder of the Discovery Channel- John S. Hendricks- started it all. The service launched on a global scale in September of that same year. Since then, CuriosityStream has provided users with a bunch of nonfiction content that allows them to discover more about the world around them without having to leave the couch.

Who Benefits Most from This Service?

CuriosityStream is perfect for people who love documentaries or people who enjoy learning. It is an excellent source of information for the sake of learning.

While the series or films may not certify you as an expert, they are a great way to learn more about the world for fun. Overall, customers who would enjoy CuriosityStream the most are those who love to learn and watch documentaries.

People who enjoy fictional television or movies would not find the ultimate value in this streaming platform. There is no fictional content within CuriosityStream. Therefore, if you are someone who prefers fiction, then this platform is not for you.

However, if you’re a documentary fan like me, you’ll love it.

How Much Does CuriosityStream Cost?

The CuriosityStream price is very reasonable for the amount of content it has on it. There are different plans to choose from.

You can start with the monthly plan- at $2.99 per month, or you can get into an annual plan at $19.99 per year. Considering the prices for many other streaming platforms, CuriosityStream offers excellent value for its content.

I’m a huge doco fan, and a lot of the streaming services have limited selections. Therefore, if you want to get into learning something new, CuriosityStream is the perfect service for you.

CuriosityStream does have a free trial for seven days. While it is great that there is a trial, this does seem pretty short in comparison to other streaming platforms. Many offer a 30-day free trial, but CuriosityStream only provides seven.

This may not be enough time for you to get a feel for the entire platform. Plus, there are many CuriosityStream reviews that state some customers had some issues with the trial being free. Users would see either an unforeseen small charge or no notification that they would get charged the annual price.

While this issue varies from customer to customer, it is still worrisome and annoying. However, I can say this didn’t happen to me. I went and paid the full price for the service because I use it.

What the CuriosityStream Service Includes

When you sign up for CuriosityStream, you get access to thousands of documentaries that fuel your interest. All of them appear in high definition. However, the specific package you choose can heighten the high definition and the visuals. You get access to the higher quality definition when you pay for the more expensive packages.

There are a variety of programs featured on the website. If you enjoy the History Channel, Discovery Channel, or other related channels, you can enjoy the content on CuriosityStream. Since the creator of the service is also the founder of the Discovery Channel, it makes sense that the two have similar content.

For the science category, there is content about outer space, animals, and more. When it comes to history, there are series about World War II, the history of space exploration, and tons more.

As you can see, there is a lot of overlap between the categories. However, it just goes to show you that there is overlap between many things in life. A lot of the content on this streaming platform has exclusive series wherein the rights reserved go to CuriosityStream.

Although not made by the platform, there are nonfiction series that only appear on this specific service that you cannot find anywhere else.

With CuriosityStream, you get access to all the content on a variety of devices. These include smartphones, tablets, and laptops. You can also stream the documentaries on a range of TV services, such as Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, and even Xbox One. Also, you can take the content anywhere you want- even places without Wi-Fi. You can download the content and take it with you.

Although the service gives users easy access to all its content, many CuriosityStream reviews show disappointment that many of the series episodes are only 15 minutes or so. While they vary in size, the average time for an episode in a docuseries is about 15 minutes. This can be either good or bad for you. The short episodes could be the perfect amount of time for you to learn something new. However, you could be looking for something longer. No matter your preference, it is essential to note that a lot of the content is short.

Additionally, you should also be aware that there are some regional restrictions, although very minimal. Almost all the content is available on a global scale. Meaning, anyone can watch the material anywhere in the world. However, there are some docs restricted in the United States. There are very few, but it is something to take into consideration.

Overview of Specific Features

The content featured in CuriosityStream gives an in-depth look at subjects regarding history, science, society, and more. The credibility of each documentary depends on the documentary selected. For example, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian created a series featured on the platform.

For the most part, the featured content is reliable and credible, often produced or created by experts in a particular field of study. Therefore, you can learn new things knowing you are getting the correct information.

CuriosityStream can be an add on to Amazon Prime. Therefore, if you have an Amazon Prime account, you can add CuriosityStream on to your bill and pay all in one place. However, contrary to what some users may think, CuriosityStream is not free with Amazon Prime. It is a paid add on. Additionally, if you have Amazon streaming, like an Amazon Fire TV, you must have an account through curiositystream.com.

Many reviews for the service suggest getting a CuriosityStream account directly through their website, rather than through Amazon. Users have expressed their disdain after subscribing through Amazon.

CuriosityStream also provides some incentives for referring a friend or family member to their service. You can get prizes for referring a certain number of friends to the service. However, do not recommend it unless you are satisfied with the service. You should review the site yourself before telling someone else to participate.

If you have a business or are an educator, then CuriosityStream has special offers for you. If you have a business, you can purchase CuriosityStream as a perk for your employees. If you run a library, you can also give your patrons access if they have a library card.

As for educators, you can sign up with exclusive perks that make the service more affordable for the classroom. Giving students access to educational videos may enhance your lesson plans and enrich students’ education.

How to Install, Use, and Get the Most out of CuriosityStream

To get CuriosityStream, you must first decide whether to get it through the platform’s website or Amazon Prime, if applicable. Most users recommend purchasing through the website, even if you have an Amazon account. You can still sign in and get access through your Fire TV, Apple TV, or whatever streaming device you have.

If you decide to go through the website, you need to enter your email address and credit card information. Then, follow a few steps to complete the sign-up process.

The process of signing up is where most users find the most issues. Many have problems with their free trial not being free or the steps to sign up take longer and are more complicated than necessary. Users who find these issues usually are signing up through Amazon Prime. Therefore, you should join the CuriosityStream website.

The user interface can also be a little bothersome. An example is the rewind button. There is no indication of how far back the video goes. Overall, it can be annoying to have to sit and hear some of the same information all over again.

Additionally, the service tends to “forget” where users last left off on their series. After streaming a particular documentary, all your progress may disappear. This is an issue for some users. It can be hard to remember where you last left off, so having the program forget as well is also very annoying.

Personally, I didn’t even notice this until I read it in a few reviews. I usually watch episodes in full, but I do see how it could get frustrating if you want to watch the first half of a documentary one day and finish it the following day.

To get the most out of this service, you should stream as much as you like. CuriosityStream has a great price, considering how much it offers. To get the most for your money, stream as much as possible, or as much as you like.

You can also take advantage of some of the referral rewards. When you refer friends to the service, you can get prizes. This is another great chance to get the most out of CuriosityStream.

Alternatives to CuriosityStream

There are many streaming platforms available today. However, there are not many documentary streaming services like CuriosityStream that offer only nonfiction series. CuriosityStream holds its initial premise of offering only nonfiction content, whereas many other services provide either both fiction and nonfiction or solely fiction.

Netflix, however, is becoming a competitor for CuriosityStream. It is one of the biggest streaming platforms today, and it offers a variety of nonfiction films and docuseries. Netflix is not like CuriosityStream, though, because CuriosityStream seems to focus a lot on teaching users about new things. Its series seem to be more educational rather than amusing. That is not to say CuriosityStream is not fun to use. There is just a greater focus on teaching and learning.

The Final Verdict: Is CuriosityStream Worth It?

Considering how much you must pay, CuriosityStream is worth the money. There is so much to discover since there are over 1000 series. You can select your payment plan, too, which starts at $2.99 per month.

There are technical issues that stem from the sign-up process and the design of the website/app. However, if you are a lover of nonfiction series, then you can easily overlook the technical issues.

All in all, this streaming platform is a great place to find nonfiction films and series that appeal to you and your interests. The focus is to teach users something new, and the featured series do just that. Therefore, if you are considering CuriosityStream and you love nonfiction television, then this service is perfect for you.
